The verdict
Both want to be the only tool you use. ClickUp gets there with sheer feature count and a lot of configuration. monday.com gets there with a visual, approachable interface and less depth. Pick ClickUp if someone will invest in setting it up. Pick monday.com if adoption speed matters more than how much the tool can theoretically do.

ClickUp
$7/seat/mo on Unlimited (billed annually)
Free tier. Unlimited members and tasks, capped at 60 MB of storage.
Watch out. The whole workspace sits on one plan, so you cannot upgrade a few power users. Brain AI is $9 per user per month on top; Everything AI is $28.

$12/seat/mo on Standard (billed annually), 3-seat minimum
Free tier. Up to 2 seats, 3 boards and 3 docs.
Watch out. Three-seat minimum, and seats are sold in blocks of 3, 5, 10 and up, so a 4-person team buys 5 and a 6-person team buys 10.

| Free plan | Unlimited members and tasks, capped at 60 MB of storage. | Up to 2 seats, 3 boards and 3 docs. |
| Setup time | Hours. The default workspace exposes most of the feature set at once and needs pruning before a team can focus. | Under an hour for a board; longer once you wire up automations and dashboards. |
| Learning curve | High. The breadth is the selling point and the cost. | Low to moderate. Visual and colour-coded, so it is easy to get people clicking. |
| Best built for | Power users who want one tool to absorb docs, whiteboards, goals, time tracking and chat, and will invest in configuring it. | Non-technical teams that want a highly visual workspace and are large enough that seat blocks round in their favour. |
| Views included | Fifteen-plus view types including board, list, Gantt, calendar, mind map and workload. | Table, board, timeline, Gantt and calendar. Timeline and Gantt start at Standard, not Basic. |

Choose ClickUp if…
You genuinely want one tool to absorb docs, whiteboards, goals, time tracking and chat, and you have the patience to configure it. ClickUp's breadth is real. So is the setup time, and so is the cost of the AI add-on once people rely on it.
Choose monday.com if…
You want a highly visual, colour-coded workspace that non-technical teams adopt quickly, and you are big enough that seat blocks round in your favour. It genuinely is easy to get people using. It is also one of the most expensive ways to track tasks once you are past Basic.
A third option
If you want one workspace but not a configuration project, Magnifi covers tasks, boards, timelines, docs and notifications for $3 a seat, free up to 5, with no per-workspace plan lock and no AI upsell. It does less than ClickUp on purpose, and costs less than monday.com without the seat blocks.
Free for teams up to 5 · $3/seat/month after
Usually yes. ClickUp Unlimited is $7 per user per month billed annually with no seat minimum. monday.com Standard is $12 billed annually with a 3-seat minimum and block pricing. ClickUp's AI add-on is separate, at $9 per user per month.
monday.com. It is more visual and exposes fewer options up front. ClickUp shows most of its feature set at once and needs pruning before a team can focus.
ClickUp does, so you cannot put a few power users on a higher tier and leave the rest. monday.com is also per-workspace and adds block-based seat rounding on top.
Both work but both are priced and built for scale. A 5-person team pays a 3-seat-block premium on monday.com and carries ClickUp's configuration overhead for features it may not use.
Yes. ClickUp's free plan has unlimited members and tasks but 60 MB of total storage. monday.com's free plan is 2 seats and 3 boards.
