Asana and ClickUp compared on real per-seat cost, complexity, and fit. Asana for polished cross-team structure, ClickUp for more features at a lower price.
Pricing verified August 2026 · updated for 2026
The verdict
Both are general-purpose work platforms, and the trade is polish versus breadth. Asana is cleaner, more opinionated and easier to roll out to non-technical teams. ClickUp does more for less money but needs real setup and can feel cluttered. Pick Asana if adoption and clarity matter most. Pick ClickUp if you want the feature count and will invest in taming it.

Asana
$10.99/seat/mo on Starter (billed annually), 2-seat minimum
Free tier. Personal covers 2 users on accounts created after 12 November 2025. Accounts opened before that keep a legacy 10-seat cap.
Watch out. Paid plans start at a 2-seat bundle, so a solo user pays for two. Monthly billing costs about 23% more than annual.

$7/seat/mo on Unlimited (billed annually)
Free tier. Unlimited members and tasks, capped at 60 MB of storage.
Watch out. The whole workspace sits on one plan, so you cannot upgrade a few power users. Brain AI is $9 per user per month on top; Everything AI is $28.

| Free plan | Personal covers 2 users on accounts created after 12 November 2025. Accounts opened before that keep a legacy 10-seat cap. | Unlimited members and tasks, capped at 60 MB of storage. |
| Setup time | Under an hour for a basic project; longer to roll out portfolios, rules and forms across teams. | Hours. The default workspace exposes most of the feature set at once and needs pruning before a team can focus. |
| Learning curve | Moderate. The UI is approachable, but the useful views sit behind higher tiers. | High. The breadth is the selling point and the cost. |
| Best built for | Cross-functional teams coordinating work across departments, with portfolios and goals non-technical people will actually use. | Power users who want one tool to absorb docs, whiteboards, goals, time tracking and chat, and will invest in configuring it. |
| Views included | List, board, timeline and calendar. Timeline, dashboards and rules require Starter or above. | Fifteen-plus view types including board, list, Gantt, calendar, mind map and workload. |

Choose Asana if…
You coordinate work across departments and need portfolios, goals and workload views that non-technical teams will actually use. Asana is strong at cross-functional visibility. You are paying for that breadth whether or not you use it.
Choose ClickUp if…
You genuinely want one tool to absorb docs, whiteboards, goals, time tracking and chat, and you have the patience to configure it. ClickUp's breadth is real. So is the setup time, and so is the cost of the AI add-on once people rely on it.
A third option
If you want one workspace without either the Asana price or the ClickUp setup, Magnifi covers tasks, boards, timelines, docs and notifications at $3 a seat, free up to 5, with no seat minimum. It is deliberately narrower than both. For a small team that is usually the point.
Free for teams up to 5 · $3/seat/month after
Yes, noticeably. ClickUp Unlimited is $7 per user per month billed annually with no seat minimum. Asana Starter is $10.99 billed annually and starts at a 2-seat bundle. ClickUp's AI is a separate add-on if you want it.
Asana. It exposes fewer options and guides you toward a standard project structure. ClickUp gives you almost everything at once, which is powerful and overwhelming in equal measure.
ClickUp, by a wide margin: more view types, native docs, whiteboards, goals and time tracking. Whether your team needs them is the real question.
Yes. ClickUp's free plan has unlimited members and tasks but only 60 MB of storage across the whole workspace. Asana's free Personal plan is 2 users on accounts created after 12 November 2025.
Both scale, differently. Asana Advanced adds portfolios and workload views; ClickUp Business adds dashboards and more automation. Asana tends to need less internal maintenance as headcount grows.
